Sunday is the other quiet upgrade. The Cove Waterfront Restaurant and Tiki Bar hosts live music every week Friday through Sunday, and the Reggae Sundays slot with the Reggae Souljahs Duo has become a standing appointment for boaters tying up at the docks off the Hillsboro Inlet. Near the pier, Deerfield Island Park is a 53-acre Urban Wilderness Area accessible only by boat and located on the Intracoastal Waterway, where you can picnic, explore trails through mangroves, stop by the butterfly garden, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the rare gopher tortoise, grey foxes, raccoons, armadillos, and seabirds throughout the park. There is a free passenger ferry that runs on weekends from Sullivan Park.
If you have visiting family in July and you have already done the beach, the pier, and Oceans 234, this is the play. It is twenty minutes by ferry, it is shaded, and it is the closest thing to old Florida you can reach without driving to Jonathan Dickinson.
The new pizza that reset the Sicilian slice
Off the beach, the news that traveled fastest through the neighborhood chats this June was a second-generation family pizzeria opening on Federal. The original Thick and Thin Pizzeria in Sandalfoot Cove opened its second location in Deerfield Beach, at 230 N Federal Highway near Publix in Hillsboro Square. The next-generation son Alessandro and daughter Gabriela, who have worked alongside the family in West Boca for many years, are now in the new store.
The reason to flag it: the Sicilian slice bench in Deerfield has been thin for a while. This is a legitimate addition, and it fills a lunch gap on the Cove Shopping Center side of town where the options had thinned to sandwich chains.
A working Friday, mapped
Here is the routine that now exists, assembled from parts that were not all there last July:
- 3:30 p.m. Walk or bike to the Break House downstairs bar. Order into the tail end of happy hour before the beach crowd rolls off the sand.
- 5:30 p.m. Head up to the rooftop for the sunset shift. Same tab, different view. Sunset around 8:15 in July.
- 7:30 p.m. Cut down onto the sand for whichever act Friday Night Sound Waves has booked that week.
- 10:00 p.m. If you still have energy, the Cove or Dukes on Federal for a nightcap. If you don't, you're already three blocks from your car.
The whole loop lives inside a half-mile radius. No causeway, no I-95, no valet, no reservation for the first stop. That combination did not exist at this density in 2024, and it is worth using while the summer crowds are thin and the wait times are honest.
